Each nylon insert is press-fit into the steel head with ridges that hold it securely in place. It does not unscrew.

To remove a worn insert, clamp the nylon insert into a vise so the jaws grip the sides of the insert firmly with the mallet facing upright. Rock the mallet gently back and forth to unseat the insert until it pops free. The steel shot will not fall out.

To install the new insert, place it flat on a sturdy surface, then position the drop mallet over it with the open side facing down. Tap the opposite face of the mallet (the side with the remaining insert) until the new insert seats fully into place.
